Lithuania moving culture attache to US from Washington to New York
Lithuania's government has given a green light to having its cultural attache to the US reside in New York rather than in Washington D.C.
In response to a proposal from the Culture Ministry, a decision was made to establish the position at the Lithuanian consulate general in New York and scrap the post in the diplomatic mission in Washington D.C.
"Washington is the country's political capital, and the field of culture is not administered or subsidized there on the federal level. Meanwhile, New York is the world capital of culture and art market, cultural production quoted there acquires the status of production quoted on the global market. The most rational way for Lithuania to spread and consolidate its culture in the US is presentation and consolidation on the New York art market. This requires consistent and active operations on the New York art scene, which is the ultimate goal of many countries," the ministry said.
According to the ministry's statement, New York is home to the largest and most important cultural institutions, including museums that shape, present and assess cultural phenomena worldwide, as well as commercial galleries, concert institutions, music, theater, dance agencies and producer companies, publishing and media companies, representations of film and television industry. Key lobbyists, investors and sponsors of the culture industry also reside in New York.
