Vestager sees separation of Lithuanian railway co's operations as one of options

Šarūnas Keserauskas, Margrethe Vestager

Separation of operations of the state-run railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LG) is one of the ways of solving the competition offense, which led to a fine of nearly 28 million euros from Brussels, says the European Union's Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.

"During this process where we tried to find settlement, different solutions were discussed. That might be my lack of imagination but one of most obvious solutions is to rebuild tracks but other solutions could be found. (Lithuanian Railways' separation) has been discussed from the beginning of the case over the years but in the end no sufficiently strong commitments could be found and so we ended in situation where we are now," Vestager said at a Vilnius news conference on Tuesday.

In her words, separation of LG operations is not mandatory in an effort to clear the competition violation, however, it is one of the possible options.
