Lithuania could extend list of foreigners hired through simplified procedure - PM

Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis says that the government could extend the list of professions subject to simplified procedures for employing foreigners if a shortage of certain specialists emerged in the market, but he thinks that there is no need for facilitating entry into the country for all foreigners.

"The government has approved a list of 27 professions that require high qualifications and are badly needed for the economy. A list of highly qualified professionals for whom entry into Lithuania has been simplified," Skvernelis told the LRT radio station on Tuesday morning.

"If we see that some sectors face a critical shortage of highly qualified specialists, then we could add one or another profession to the list," he said.

When asked about a need for facilitating entry into Lithuania for all foreigners to amid a rapid population decline due to emigration, the prime minister said that the top priority was to stop Lithuanians from leaving their country.

The government last February approved a list of 27 highly qualified professions for which there are not enough local workers. Such foreigners are issued with permits through a simplified procedure. The minimum salary threshold for highly-qualified foreigners was lowered to 1.5 times the average monthly salary, from three times.
