State protection requested for Europe's oldest kurenkahn
The Neringa municipality plans to apply to the Cultural Heritage Department with a request to list Europe's oldest kurenkahn Kuršis, a traditional wooden type of flat bottom boat that was used in the Curonian lagoon, in the register of cultural values, Lietuvos Žinios daily said on Saturday.
The boat is turning 25 next year, which would make Kursis the youngest object in Lithuania's history under state protection.
Vitalija Jonušienė, owner of the boat, said that the flatboat was made by her husband in 1993 and was still fit for sailing, however, needed constant repairs. Heritage protection specialists said the owners would be able to apply for funding for maintenance, if Kuršis is listed as a cultural value under state protection.
