Referendum on reduction of Lithuanian MP number expected in 2019

Votes counting in Vilnius

Lithuania's citizens could decide on reduction of the number of parliamentarians together with the 2019 presidential elections and the referendum on dual citizenship, says Parliamentary Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis.

In his words, this would be an additional impetus for people to come to polling stations.

"We should probably hold another referendum at the same time, for instance, on reduction of the number of MPs. I believe this could bring very many people to the referendum. We have already discussed this, political scientists are in support of the idea that an optimum Seimas for Lithuania should include 121 persons," Pranckietis told Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

He said the proposal to hold the dual citizenship referendum in conjunction with the presidential elections was in hopes of ensuring bigger voter turnout and lower costs.

On Tuesday, Pranckietis said the referendum on broader dual citizenship could take place for two days next year – on May 12 and May 26, together with the presidential elections, He also emphasized that the priority would be holding the referendum on one day.

Lithuania's Central Electoral Commission has said elections to the European Parliament would be held on May 26, run-off voting in the presidential race. Next year, Lithuania will also vote in local elections in late February or early March.

Precise dates of presidential, local, EP elections and referendums are announced by the parliament.
