Lithuania condemns Syria's decision to recognize independence of Georgia's regions
"Lithuania condemns Syria's decision to recognize Georgia's regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as "independent states", – Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. – It is a gross violation of Sakartvelo's sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as international law. We call on the government of Syria to pursue foreign policy based on the norms of international law, and not on pressure by third countries, and immediately annual this decision."
After Damascus recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday it launched the procedure of cutting diplomatic ties with Syria.
Earlier on Tuesday, Abkhazia and South Ossetia announced that Syria had recognized their independence and will establish diplomatic relations with the two countries by opening its embassies.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia declared their independence from Georgia in the 1990s. Moscow recognized their independence after the 20098 war with Georgia. Russia currently deploys thousands of its troops in military based in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The international communities deems Abkhazia and South Ossetia as occupied territories of Georgia.
