Vilnius authorities will spend over 10 million euros over the next two years to install around 3,000 underground or semi-underground waste containers.

780 areas with 3,000 containers, 4–5 in each, will be installed in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius Vice Mayor Linas Kvedaravičius told a pres conference on Thursday. There will be specific containers for household waste as well as paper, plastic and glass.

Tomas Vaitkevičius, head of the Vilnius County Waster Management Center, said underground containers will allow saving around 0.5 million euros every year, spent on waste management.

In 2016, the Lithuanian government allocated 70 million euros from EU funds for the purchase and installation of new containers. It will cost 10.2 million euros for Vilnius, with 85 percent covered with EU funds.
