Eighty-eight persons, including 69 men and 19 women, were diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Lithuania in January through July this year, down from 142 cases in the same period last year, the Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS said.

The number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in prisons dropped to 20 this year, from 68 a year ago, it said.

The number of new HIV cases in the Alytus correctional facility alone fell to six, from 44 last year.

Simona Banenienė, spokeswoman for the Prison Department, told BNS that the spread of HIV had been reversed through educational activity and preventive measures, such as searches in prisons.

According to the center, a total of 3,100 persons have been diagnosed with HIV in Lithuania and almost every seventh of them has died due to various causes.
