6,000 residents in Lithuania would be evacuated in case of major Astravyets incident

6,000 residents in Lithuania would have to be evacuated within a 30-km-radius from the Astravyets nuclear power plant in Belarus, in case of a major incident at this nuclear facility.

Such evacuation is envisaged in the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior's updated residential protection plan, in case of a major incident in Astravyets amid weather conditions the least favorable to Lithuania.

"We have planned the evacuation of around 6,000 residents," Edgaras Geda of the Fire and Rescue Department, told a press conference on Wednesday.

He underlined that residents would be evacuated from the most dangerous 30 kilometer zone only in the worst case scenario, in case of a major accident under the least favorable weather conditions of winds blowing from the east to the west.
