A. Monkevičius: teachers‘ wages could exceed the average wage in two or three years
It is possible, after two or three years, for teachers’ wages to be 20-30% higher than the country’s average wage, Minister of Education, Science and Sports Algirdas Monkevičius told LRT Radio. According to him, for this there is need for national consensus and a long-term plan, lrt.lt writes.
"If we think that the role of teachers is crucial and creates the value that the country expects, wages should also be 20 to 30% higher than the average. We should talk about a clear plan now, come to agreement at the cabinet so that regardless of how the country's political government changes, there would be national consensus that this is important for the country and regardless of any developments, that this plan would be implemented over a period of time. I believe that we could reach this in two or three years," A. Monkevičius told LRT Radio.
When commenting on meetings with education staff trade unions, the minister highlighted that on the main matters, the trade unions' positions do not differ. On Thursday, there are plans for meetings with another two trade union leaders.
